Two vehicles collided Tuesday morning near Riverside, sending two people to the hospital. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident happened at approximately 7:38 a.m. yesterday on Highway 22, west of Highway 218, near Bud’s Custom Meats.

A Chevrolet HHR driven by 56-year-old Mary Albert of Sigourney was traveling westbound on Highway 22 and slowing to turn south when it was rear-ended. Reportedly, the 16-year-old driver of Riverside, operating a Chevrolet Silverado, was distracted at the time of the accident.

Albert was transported by ambulance to the University of Iowa hospitals. The teenager was transported by private vehicle to Mercy in Iowa City.

Riverside Fire Department, Riverside First Responders, Washington County Sheriff’s personnel, Iowa State Patrol and Washington County Ambulance responded to the scene. Traffic was slowed to one lane for some time.
