The conference opener for the Washington Demons boys’ soccer team (1-1) wasn’t as successful as their season opener. The Demon boys’ soccer team continued their opening week of action Thursday evening in Fairfield (3-0) in a Southeast Conference clash with the Trojans. Fairfield came away with a 4-2 victory.

Washington fell behind 3-1 in the first half, but played even with Fairfield in the final 40 minutes. Senior Joe Smith’s performance stood out in Fairfield, setting up freshman Andres Gutierrez for his first ever varsity goal.  Smith got on the scoreboard in the second half, scoring the lone goal in the frame.

Washington and Fairfield tied for the Southeast Conference title last season.

The loss drops Washington to 1-1 on the season. The Demon boys’ soccer team opens up their home schedule Tuesday evening against Southeast Conference member Keokuk (0-5) with match time scheduled for 6 p.m.
