The varsity soccer debut for Washington freshman goal keeper Thomas Zimmer couldn’t of gone much better. Faced with the task of playing the 10th ranked Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks, Zimmer collected 13 total saves and posted a shut out in a 2-0 season opening victory at the Wellman Recreation Complex.

The win marked the first time Washington had ever beaten Mid-Prairie in boys’ soccer. Junior Christian Mejia scored both goals for Washington, scoring the first goal in the third minute and his final goal in the 60th minute. Mejia says this win is a wonderful achievement for the soccer program but are is already focused on his next opponent. “Last year we had a good season, finishing as co-conference champs with Fairfield,” Mejia said, “We have them on Thursday and I am we are looking forward to the game.”

This is the second straight season the Demons have shut out their season opening opponent, posting a 4-0 victory last season against the Mediapolis Bulldogs. Zimmer says he was surprised by his performance in the net. “All I heard at practice up to this game was how good they (Mid-Prairie) were.” Zimmer said, “Even my teammates said I wouldn’t get a clean sheet (shut out).”

The win improves Washington to 1-0 overall ahead of their conference opener Thursday afternoon in Fairfield. The loss drops Mid-Prairie to 0-3 overall, matching the total number of losses from last season. Mid-Prairie soccer coach Pat Cady says despite the early struggles, he isn’t ready to panic. “I told the kids it is tough going 0-3, but it doesn’t matter,” Cady said, “We still get a postseason opportunity at the end of the year. We are continuing to put everything together.”

Mid-Prairie returns to the pitch at 5 p.m Friday evening hosting a non-conference tilt with Cedar Valley at the Wellman Recreation Complex.
