Iowa’s legislature has yet to set the state supplemental aid for schools. At this week’s Washington Community School Board meeting, superintendent Dr. Mike Jorgensen said without having anything set the budget has to be created on zero percent allowable growth. The school’s budget must be set by April 15th.

Jorgensen explained a 2.5 percent allowable growth the tax rate would drop by 10 cents, but if it is set at zero percent it increases by 60 cents. At zero percent allowable growth, the proposed property tax rate per $1,000 taxable valuation is $15.05. The first increase by the district in six years.

The school board approved the proposed budget.
