A new approach to summer school for elementary students will be used this year in the Washington Community School District. Lincoln Elementary principal Dave Hoffman explains the schools are partnering with the YMCA to provide summer school that blends education with physical and social activities. Following the morning activities, students can take a school bus to Lincoln for a free lunch and will then receive a pass to the pool for the afternoon.

This program is by invitation only for students who are struggling with reading in kindergarten through fifth grade. Hoffman estimates 100 students will be in the program. Hoffman states the goal is to have students reading at grade level.
