The 2015 Drake Relays has ended for Washington’s three senior track athletes. Tommy Peterson, Jacob Hennigan, and Macy Marek represented the Demons in Des Moines during relay events on Thursday and Friday, and battled against the best high school athletes in Iowa.

Peterson competed Thursday afternoon in the 24 person high school boys’ shot put field. He recorded his shortest throw of the year, hurling the shot 50 feet 7.5 inches. His throw was two feet two inches shorter than any toss he has made this season.

Washington boys’ track coach Steve Roth believes a factor in the performance was where they held the shot put event, “Its just a mental thing throwing inside the stadium.” Roth said, “He threw 47 feet last year inside the stadium. During the state track meet he went outside and on the north side of the stadium and threw in the grass like we do everywhere else and Tommy threw 53 feet last year.”

Hennigan participated in Friday’s 110 meter hurdles event, placing 15th with a time of 15.44 seconds. The top eight runners advanced to Friday morning’s final race, which was won by Solon senior Connor Ham with a time of 14.31 seconds.

Finally, Marek competed in Friday’s 100 meter dash competition after becoming a last minute qualifier for the event on Wednesday. Of the 32 person field, she finished in 26th place with a time of 13.47 seconds.

The Demon boys’ and girls track teams return to competition on Thursday evening a part of the Ekstrand Relays at WACO High School.
