A top 10 foe in Class 1A proved to be too much for the Highland Huskies boys’ soccer team (6-4 overall) Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies welcomed the No. 8 Danville Bears (7-0 overall) to Highland High School for a battle of Southeast Iowa Super Conference squads. Danville won the league clash 6-0.

In the first half, Highland choose to go against a stiff east-northeast wind, and had troubles advancing the ball past midfield. After several shot attempts missed high in the first five minutes, Danville sophomore Kole Perkins earned the Bears’ first goal in the sixth minute, putting the ball in the bottom left corner. Perkins tacked on two additional goals in the first half, one in the 20th minute and another in the 30th minute to elevate Danville to a 3-0 halftime lead.

The wind softened as action resumed after halftime, helping the Huskies get some quality looks at the net. Highland had six shots on goal in the second half, but never could get a shot past Danville keeper Sam Banks. The Bears shared the scoring duties in the second half with Perkins, Mason Spears, and Brandon Mcleland all connecting in the final 40 minutes bringing the final score to 6-0.

Highland was held off the scoreboard for the first time this spring. Sophomore Patrick Wood posted seven saves in the loss.

The setback drops Highland’s overall record to 6-4, while the victory improves Danville to 7-0. The Huskies return to the pitch next Tuesday, hosting the Columbus Wildcats (5-5 overall) at 5 p.m.
