The struggles inside the Southeast Conference reappeared Thursday evening for the Washington Demon girls’ and boys’soccer team. The Demons started the second half of their conference schedule in Keouk, battling the Chiefs.

The girls’ matchup saw the No. 11 rated Chiefs (9-0 overall; ) make quick work of the Demons (2-8 overall; 1-4 overall), cruising to a 10-0 victory in a game called after only 60 minutes of play. Keokuk scored early and often, gaining the lead in the fourth minute. The bulk of the goals game within a 10 minute window of time in the first half between 26th and 35th minute to push a 2-0 advantage into a 7 point halftime cushion.

Keokuk scored their final three goals of the match between the 54th and 59th minutes for a final score of 10-0. Washington, who snapped a 15 game conference losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Fort Madison, has now lost back to back league matches and being outscored 13-0 in the process.

The boys’ battle produced a similar outcome for Washington (2-5 overall; 0-5 Southeast), falling 8-3 to Keokuk (6-6 overall; 5-1 Southeast). The game was back and forth throughout much of the first half with senior Khaven Wagenknecht making a quick contribution in his first game of the season. Wagenknecht scored the game’s first goal in the second minute to give Washington an early 1-0 lead. Keokuk scored their goals in bunches throughout the match, gaining the lead by putting in a pair of goals. After Joe Smith’s team leading fourth goal of the season tied the game at 2-2, the Demons allowed four unanswered goals by the Chiefs prior to intermission for a 6-2 halftime advantage.

Senior Jacob Baughman relieved Thomas Zimmer as keeper in the second half for Washington, who cut the deficit to three after Tony Torres corner kick led to Giovanni Coronel’s third goal of the season. Keokuk scored a pair of unanswered goals for an 8-3 final score. The loss is the seventh straight inside the Southeast Conference for Washington, dating back to last season.

The Demon soccer team’s will host Senior Night Monday afternoon against Southeast Conference member Fort Madison. The varsity double header kicks off with the girls’ game at 4 p.m. and the boys’ scheduled to take the field at 6 p.m.
