After squeaking through the sectional round, the Washington Demon boys’ golf team faced a loaded district meet on Wednesday. The Demons competed at the Amana Colonies Golf Course against teams from Central DeWitt, Mount Vernon, West Delaware, and Vinton-Shellsburg, needing to finish in the top two as a team or place a golfer in the top four individually to advance to next week’s state golf meet.

Central DeWitt won the district meet, scoring a 326 collectively. Mount Vernon claimed the second state tournament spot, carding 328 as a squad. West Delaware, last year’s state champions in Class 3A, won’t defend their title after a third place finish of 335 strokes. Washington ended the district tournament in fifth place out of the five team field, shooting a 372 as a unit.

The Demons were highlighted by junior Derek Anding, who carded the team’s low score of 83. It was two shots away from advancing to the state tournament as an individual golfer. Sophomore Noah Enfield recorded the team’s next lowest score, shooting a 93.

Washington lose seniors Blake Weidmann and Grant Marek to graduation. Weidmann played in seven varsity matches, scoring a personal best 36 on during the Demons’ victory April 14 at the Cedar Crest Golf Course in Columbus Junction.
