The 2015 Southeast Conference golf tournament revealed a few surprises for the Washington boys’ golf team. The yearly tournament for league bragging rights was held at the Fairfield Golf and Country Club, and the host Trojans claimed the conference title with a low score of 348 strokes.

Washington’s first surprise came off the club of sophomore Tanner Coleman, who carded a team-best 86 strokes and earned all-conference honors for the first time. Another Demon underclassmen, freshman Dalton Myers, earned the final all-conference spot by shooting an 87 for the tournament.

The tournament medalist was Fairfield junior Nick Higgins, who shot a four over 74. Higgins was 10 strokes better than the entire field. Keokuk’s Damon Wolter and Sean Longshore each recorded an 84 for the tournament, while Fairfield’s Nathan Davidson rounded out the all-conference honorees by shooting an 86.

Another surprise came from junior Derek Anding, who was vying for his second straight all-conference honor, but withdrew from the golf tournament after nine holes. Washington head golf coach Mark Berhow said Anding wasn’t feeling the best heading into Tuesday’s tournament, “He battled some sickness (Monday) and was hoping he was over it but he wasn’t quite over it.” Berhow said, “He played nine and was struggling through it so we made the decision to pull him out and he headed home after that.”

Anding came into yesterday’s golf tournament with the second best 18-hole average in the Southeast Conference, completing full rounds in 80 strokes.

The Demon boys’ golf team leaves regular season competition behind and is gearing up for Thursday’s sectional tournament at Flint Hills Golf Course in Burlington. Washington faces off against teams from Clear Creek Amana, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Mount Pleasant, Mount Vernon, Notre Dame-West Burlington, and Solon with the top two squads advancing to the district tournament on May 20 at the Amana Colonies Golf Course.
