It’s been a tale of two seasons for the Washington Demon boys’ soccer team (3-8 overall; 0-7 Southeast).

The non-conference season for the Demons has been been next to perfect, winning all of their contests against teams outside of the Southeast Conference and outscoring them 14-1 in the process. The opposite is true for Washington against the quartet of Southeast Conference members, dropping both matches this season against Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk and Mount Pleasant. The Demons’ 6-2 loss to Fairfield on May 9 is considered a non-conference meeting between the schools after being paired up in the semifinal’s of the Mid-Prairie soccer tournament.

Eight different players have scored a goal this season for Washington, seven of which have scored two or more. Senior Joe Smith and Andres Gutierrez are tied for the team lead with 5 goals a piece.

With 15 saves on Thursday against Mount Pleasant, freshman goal keeper Thomas Zimmer surpassed the 100-save plateau, leading the Southeast Conference with 105 so far this season.

Washington wraps up the non-conference portion of their schedule this afternoon, hosting the Solon Spartans (7-8 overall). After a slow start, Solon has won five of their last eight contests including posting back to back shutouts against Mount Veron (3-0) and West Delaware (4-0). Junior Dylan Doyle leads the Spartan offense with nine goals, six more than any other Solon soccer player.

Today’s non-conference soccer clash kicks off at 4:30 p.m. at Washington High School. Tune in to tomorrow’s KCII sports page for results from the match.
