The offensive struggles continued for the Washington Demon girls’ soccer team (2-9 overall; 1-5 Southeast) Monday afternoon. The Demons welcomed the Fort Madison Bloodhounds (3-9 overall; 1-5 Southeast) to Washington High School for the Demons’ final home Southeast Conference match of the season, and Fort Madison came away with a 1-0 victory.

The first half was dictated by a pair of aggressive goalkeepers as Washington’s Stephanie Evans and Fort Madison’s Breese Marsh consistently charged out of the box in the first half to keep the game at a scoreless tie heading into intermission. When a goalie leaves the 18 yard box, they can’t use their hands to field the ball. No saves were recorded through the first 40 minutes of game play.

The second half was highlighted by several missed opportunities for the Demons’ offense. An offside call took a goal away from Washington senior Lauren Swan in the 45th minute, who left the game shortly after the play due to injury. Nine minutes later, Fort Madison scored the game’s lone goal when Evans misjudged a shot from freshman Taylor Shannan. Washington put seven shots on goal in the second half, including two penalty kicks for handball infractions from the Bloodhounds, but couldn’t get a shot to go through the net.

The newest scoring drought for the Demons has grown to three full games, scoring their last goal on April 30 in an overtime win against Mediapolis. Washington’s previous scoring drought this season lasted 212 minutes of game time before Kayla Schindler broke through in the sixth minute of their first clash with Fort Madison on April 23.

Five games remain on Washington’s girls’ soccer schedule, four of the games being played away on the road. The Demons return to the pitch Thursday afternoon, facing the Mount Pleasant Panthers at East Lake Park.
