A hat trick by one of the best goal scorers in the state proved to be too much for the Washington Demon boys’ soccer team (3-11 overall) to overcome. The Demons welcomed the Fort Madison Bloodhounds to Washington High School for the opener of the Class 2A Substate 5 soccer tournament Tuesday. The Bloodhounds advances to the substate semifinals with a 5-2 victory over the Demons.

Washington got on the scoreboard first 12 minutes into the match, when junior Christian Mejia’s cross was headed by senior Khaven Wagenknecht and into the right corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage.

Fort Madison proceeded to score three straight goals before halftime, making it 3-1 at the break. In the second half, the Bloodhounds continued their scoring streak with two more goals. Three of Fort Madison’s goals came off the leg of junior Braxton Williams. Williams has connected on 38 goals this season, the second most in the state.

Mejia scored the final goal on a through ball from Giovanni Coronel with eight seconds remaining, to bring the final score to 5-2.

Washington ends the season with a 3-11 overall record.
