Another aggressive clash with a Southeast Conference opponent proved to be too much for the Washington Demon boys’ soccer team (3-10 overall; 0-8 Southeast) Thursday evening. The Demons capped off their regular season schedule against the Fairfield Trojans (10-7 overall; 5-3 Southeast) at Washington High School. The Trojans left Washington with a 5-3 victory, and a season sweep of the Demons on the pitch.

A back and forth first half saw the Trojans strike first with junior Solomon Constant used his head to deposit the ball into the bottom right corner, leading to a 1-0 advantage for Fairfield. Washington junior Christian Mejia answered for the Demons less than three minutes later, firing a shot just inside the penalty box into the bottom right corner to even the score a 1-1. A Demon defensive breakdown led to Constant’s second score of the match, a goal in the bottom right corner in the 29th minute, led to a 2-1 Trojans advantage. Washington tied the game up seconds before intermission as sophomore Kyle Anderson powered a shot from the top of the box into the middle left corner for a 2-2 halftime score.

The second half belonged to Fairfield, regaining the lead in the 43rd minute as Constant placed his third goal of the evening into the bottom right corner for a 3-2 lead. After playing nearly 20 minutes with a one goal advantage, Fairfield padded the lead in the 62nd minute with sophomore Ramiro Saldana’s touch pass getting by an injured Thomas Zimmer and into the right corner for a 4-2 lead. Fairfield added another Constant goal in the 68th minute against back up goalie John Dillion to cap off the Trojans scoring. Washington’s only second half goal came off the head of freshman Andres Gutierrez, who was set up by a free kick from Jacob Baughman, bringing the final score to 5-3.

The loss brings Washington’s regular season to a close at 3-10 overall. The Demons host their postseason opener on Tuesday, welcoming the Fort Madison Bloodhounds to town for a sub district showdown.
