In their first matchup with Southeast Conference member Keokuk last month, the Washington girls’ and boys’ soccer teams put together below average performances. The Demons fought blustery winds on April 21 as the Chiefs left Washington with a pair of victories, 6-0 in the girls’ match and 5-3 in the boys’.

Like their first meeting, the Demon girls’ soccer team (2-7 overall) will look to end a scoring drought against the Chiefs. Washington was shut out in their last game, a 4-0 setback to the Oskaloosa Indians on Monday afternoon. Senior forward Kayla Schindler has scored four goals this spring to lead Washington’s offense. Senior goal keeper Stephanie Evans has posted 151 saves through nine matches so far this season, the most by a keeper in the conference.

The Chiefs’ girls’ soccer team (8-0 overall; 5-0 Southeast) has been recognized as one of the best teams in Class 2A soccer, ranked No. 11 in this week’s poll. Keokuk has won their first seven games, outscoring their opponents 42-6. Brooke Wade and Brittany Love scored two goals a piece in Keokuk’s victory over Washington on April 21.

Washington’s boys’ soccer team (2-4 overall; 0-4 Southeast) looks to put together back-to-back victories for the first time this season. The Demons scored a season-high six goals in a shutout victory over the Mediapolis Bulldogs last Thursday at Washington High School. Washington spread the scoring between five players including Joe Smith, Christian Mejia, Tony Torres, Alex Lopez, and Andres Gutierrez each recording one goal a piece. Smith, Mejia, Torres, and Gutierrez are tied for the team lead in goals scored with three each.

Keokuk (5-6 overall; 4-1 Southeast) has turned their season around after losing their first five matches of the season. The Chiefs, winners of 5 of their last six games, fell behind 1-0 to Demons before scoring four goals in a five minute window to take control of game one in Washington. Senior Amam Nasir has a team-leading eight goals so far this spring for Keokuk. Fellow senior Jordan Martin has added seven goals so far this season.

This Southeast Conference varsity double header kicks off at 5 p.m. with the girls’ contest and boys’ match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Keokuk High School.
