Bragging rights are on the line tonight in Fort Madison as the Washington Demon boys’ and girls’ track teams battle the best from the Southeast Conference. The five members of the league will dual for all-conference honors in each individual track and field event, and crown the boys’ and girls’ conference champion tonight at Fort Madison High School. In the Southeast Conference, the top finisher in each individual event earns all-conference honors.

For the Washington Demon girls’ track team, senior Macy Marek is going for back-to-back all-conference honors in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Marek has the conference’s top times in both events heading into tonight’s Southeast Conference meet. Her best 100 meter dash was clocked at 12.56 seconds at Monday’s Brookhart-Crew Relays in Fairfield. Marek’s top 200 meter dash came on April 30 in Wayland, recording a time of 26.75 seconds.

Junior Morgan Kimball attempts to repeat as all-conference in the 400 meter dash. Kimball best quarter-mile run came on April 30 in Wayland, posting a time of 1:02.93. Her time is the second fastest in the league, less than two seconds behind Mount Pleasant senior Kelsey Phipps for the conference lead.

Marek and Kimball will join together in trying to earn all-conference recognition for their relay team as well. The pair, along with Makenzi Marek and Amber Salow, have the league’s best recorded time in the 800 sprint medley at 1:54.59 set Monday at the Brookhart-Crew Relays.

For the Washington Demon boys’ track team, senior Tommy Peterson goes for back to back all-conference recognition in the shot put competition. Peterson has won 10 separate shot put competitions this spring, recording his best throw at the Demon Relays on April 9th. His best throw of 55 feet 7.5 inches is a full three feet better than the conference’s next best throw.

This is the final track meet before next week’s district track meet, where athletes will compete for a spot at the state track meet in Des Moines May 21-23.

First events of the 2015 Southeast Conference Track meet begin at 5 p.m. at Fort Madison High School. Tune in to Friday’s KCII local sports page for results from the conference meet.
