Hard to believe it was just one year ago the Washington Demon boys’ soccer team (3-7 overall; 0-6 Southeast) had clinched a share of the Southeast Conference title. Washington has lost their previous eight matches with Southeast Conference opponents dating back to last spring, being outscored 47-18 in those contests.

Washington’s recent league setback came on Monday evening as the Demons hosted senior night against the Fort Madison Bloodhounds. Fort Madison scored six first half goals, four being scored by junior Braxton Williams in a 10-minute window, helping the Bloodhounds to a 6-2 victory. Washington’s Tony Torres and Khaven Wagenknecht each deposited a goal in the defeat.

The Demons look to close the losing streak against the last team they defeated in league play, the Mount Pleasant Panthers. Washington defeated Mount Pleasant 3-2 on May 27 of last year, marking the last victory against a Southeast Conference foe. In their first meeting this spring, Mount Pleasant went ahead 3-0 at halftime and took the match 4-2 on April 27.

The Panthers haven’t won a match since defeating Washington, being outscored 13-3 in three matches. Senior Zoom Gwamna has a team-leading five goals for Mount Pleasant.

Today’s Southeast Conference boys’ soccer battle kicks off at 4:30 p.m. from Washington High School.
