A commanding performance has the Washington Demon girls’ golf team playing golf in next week’s state tournament. The Demons battled a 12 team field in the Class 4A Regional 4 tournament at St Andrew’s Golf Course in Cedar Rapids. The Demons had the top three individual golfers at the meet and won the team title by 56 strokes, shooting a tournament low 340.

Freshman Sarah Nacos continued her stellar freshman campaign on Tuesday, earning medalist honors with a 79 stroke performance at St Andrews. Junior Deanna Peiffer finished two strokes behind Nacos for second place in the tournament. Senior Sarah Waitie completed her final regional tournament in 86 strokes, posting the third best score in the field.

Washington’s best competition came from members of the Southeast Conference. League rivals the Fairfield Trojans and Mount Pleasant Panthers battled for second place as the Trojans claimed the final spot in next week’s state tournament, finish with 396 strokes as a team. The Panthers finished their season in third place at regionals, posting a score of 398 strokes.

Washington and Fairfield advance to Monday’s state tournament play. The Class 4A State Tournament tees off at 9 a.m. at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.
