The bats of the Washington Demon girls’ softball team were silenced on Friday evening. As you heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, the Demons welcomed the Highland Huskies (2-0 overall) to Washington’s Softball Complex for a single non-conference varsity clash. The Huskies held Washington’s offense to two singles, blanking the Demons 10-0 in five innings.

The Huskies offense manufactured two or more runs in four of the five innings last night, scoring 10 runs on 12 hits. Senior Baliey Walsh led the Huskies offense, going three for four at the plate with three RBI doubles. Junior Cheyann Adamson went two for three with a triple and two runs batted in. The Huskies received an solid pitching outing from senior Katie Springer. She threw all five innings, giving up no runs on two hits while fanning five Demon batters.

After producing 15 runs on 13 hits against Columbus on Wednesday evening, Washington was held to just a single a piece for freshman Morgan Brinning and eighth grader Haylee Wilson in the setback. Demon softball coach Angie Schrader said her team needs to produce more than two hits in a game to be successful this season. “We definitely need more base runners so two hits are not going to get it done.” Schrader said, “Those are things we can work on and get better at but we can’t be satisfied with just hanging in there for a while. Yeah we are a young team but we want to win games.”

The loss evens the Demons overall record at 1-1. Washington returns to the diamond on Monday, traveling to Fort Madison for a Southeast Conference double header with the Bloodhounds. Live play-by-play coverage from Fort Madison High School begins with the Washington Hy-Vee Pregame Show at 5 p.m. on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com.
