A pair of Washington Demon alumni played a role in helping the Cornell College Rams clinch a spot in the Midwest Conference tournament. Needing to sweep Sunday’s two game homestand with Monmouth College, the Rams came through with identical 10-3 victories versus the Fighting Scots in both games.

Freshman Walker Breard, a 2014 graduate of Washington High School, started at first base in both games for the Rams. Breard went 4 for 8 at the plate in the two games, hitting three singles, a double, and drove in two runs in the pair of wins.

Junior Jared Henry, a 2012 graduate of Washington High School, pitched the top of the ninth inning in game two, retiring the side in order to clinch the victory.

The wins, coupled with a Grinnell sweep over Illinois College, has helped the Rams clinch a spot in the Midwest Conference’s four team conference tournament. Cornell (16-20 overall, 9-7 MWC South Division) won the tiebreaker over Illinois College for the No. 2 spot in the division. The Rams open tournament play on Friday against the Ripon Red Hawks, the North Division Champions. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. at Woodland Park in Newton.
