As gardens are being planted, many people are thinking about preventing weeds. Weeds can be problem for asparagus, raspberries and strawberries and horticulturists from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advise hand pulling and cultivation is the best practice for home gardeners.
For asparagus, hoeing and hand pulling should be done on a regular basis in spring and summer, along with an application of four to six inches of straw in summer. For raspberries, it is recommended to cultivate the plant in the spring and summer, but no deeper than two or three inches. Mulch is also recommended on well-drained soils. Strawberry patches should be cultivated often, but shallow, to control weeds.
