Two members of the Southeast Conference took their soccer teams to Kalona Saturday to compete in the 2015 Iowa Mennonite School Soccer Tournament. The Iowa Mennonite School soccer team welcomed the Fairfield Trojans, the Fort Madison Bloodhounds, and the West Liberty Comets to town for their yearly tournament and ended up facing the two teams from the Southeast Conference.

IMS (3-3 overall) was paired up against the Fairfield Trojans (6-4 overall) in game one Saturday, falling to the Trojans 5-0. Senior Kobi Russom highlighted the match for IMS, recording 15 saves of Farifield’s 30 shots on goal. It was the first game this spring the team had been kept off the scoreboard.

In the tournament’s consolation game, IMS squared off against the Fort Madison Bloodhound (6-3 overall). The Bloodhounds were too much for IMS, winning 5-3 to claim third place in the tournament. IMS had a 2-1 lead in the first half with goals from Danny Lam and Anthony Villatoro before allowing a break away goal before intermission for a 2-2 halftime score. Both teams went on a scoring drought in the second half before Fort Madison claimed the lead for good with nine minutes left. The Bloodhounds scored two more goals before the horn sounded, and IMS senior Kirby Shetler added a late goal to make the final score 5-3.

IMS head coach Marcus Miller says he likes to schedule quality opponents for their tournament, “Sometimes there are teams in the (Southeast Iowa) Super Conference that aren’t as strong, and sometimes we aren’t either.” Miller said, “You know with Fairfield you are always going to have a physical match and Fort Madison the coaches are good people and they always have a competitive team.”

IMS’s overall record drops to 3-3, but they are still 3-1 in conference play. The squad returns to Southeast Iowa Super Conference competition tonight, hosting the Columbus Wildcats at 5:30 p.m.
