Fencing will be installed around organic pasture near Kalona following a successful online crowd sourcing campaign. Over $20,000 was donated to the Kalona Supernatural Kickstarter campaign by 190 backers.
Phil Forbes is supply chain director for Farmers Creamery and owner of Marilyn Farms. Once the fencing is installed, he’ll start offering custom grazing to Kalona’s Amish farmers, which involves him caring for their younger, non-producing heifers on his organic pasture, allowing the farmers to increase the size of their milking herd.
This will help increase Farmers Creamery’s production of organic milk. According to Forbes, the organic dairy industry has been growing steadily in the over 10 years he’s been in business, but the rate at which the average consumer is switching to organic dairy has been so great over the last two years, there isn’t enough supply to meet the demand in the United States.
