Few boys’ track teams across Iowa will have more events represented this week at the Iowa Girls and Boys State Track and Field Meet than the Lone Tree Lions. Ten Lion track athletes will participate in eight events on the blue oval at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

The Lions’ 4×100 meter relay team is the top rated crew in Class 1A after winning the District 10 race in 44.66 seconds. The squad includes junior Jared Hudson, senior Nick Viner, senior Ty Schillerstrom and sophomore Jovonte Squires.

The Lions have qualified four other relay teams for the state track meet. The 4×200 meter squad of Hudson, N. Viner, Travis Gilliham, and Squires won the District 10 meet, clocking the fourth best time in at Iowa at 1:33.58. The 4×400 meter relay team of N. Viner, Schillerstrom, Gilliham, and Squires makes the cut after posting a time of 3:36.04, the 22nd best time in the state. The Distance medley team of Hudson, N. Viner, Gilliham, and Jake Viner comes into the state meet with the fifth best time in Iowa, posting a time of 3:45.49 in the district meet. Finally, the 4×110 meter shuttle hurdle team of senior Drew Sides, sophomore Michael Schmidt, junior Caleb Christian, and Squires qualified for the state meet with a time of 1:01.9. It is the 10th best time among the 24 team field.

Squires and Hudson will also represents Lone Tree in the long jump competition. Squires won the District 10 meet with a leap of 21 feet 8.25 inches, ranking him second in the state. Hudson had the state’s 18th best jump, skying 19 feet 11.75 inches.

Sides is showcasing the Lions in 110 meter hurdles. His district run of 16.07 seconds was the 15th best performance in Class 1A last week.

Lastly, sophomore Ross Swinton will make his first trip to the state meet. His 1600 meter performance of 4:45.67 seconds in Wayland last Thursday ranks as the 12th best time in the state.

The first events for the Lone Tree boys’ track team will be Thursday at 2:40 p.m. when the shuttle hurdle team competes in the preliminary races.
