Washington’s regional champion in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes highlights the Demons competing in day one of the Iowa Girls and Boys State Track and Field Meet.

Senior sprinter Macy Marek opens up her final state track meet at 10:47 a.m. today, running in the preliminaries of the 100 meter dash. Her regional sprint of 12.98 seconds ranks as the sixth best time in Class 3A.

Two hours later at approximately 12:50 p.m. Marek will line up for the preliminaries of the 200 meter dash. Her regional time of 26.88 seconds is the 13th ranked performance in the state.

Should Marek finish among the top eight fastest times in the preliminary stage, she would advance to the 100 meter dash finals on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. and the 200 meter dash final on Saturday at 1:25 p.m.

Washington only has one other event on during the state track meet’s first day. The boys’ 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle team of senior Jacob Hennigan, senior Alex Gonzalez, sophomore Caleb Bex, and senior Gage Redlinger competes in the preliminary round. Their district time of 59.73 seconds ranks eighth in the state, and the crew is set to run in Heat 5 Lane 5 against Boyden Hull, Atlantic, and Boone. Should the Demon shuttle hurdle team place among the top eight fastest teams, Washington would qualify for the shuttle hurdle final on Saturday at 11:40 a.m.
