Going into Thursday night’s game versus the Mediapolis Bulldogs, the Washington Demon boys’ soccer team had five players with two goals each on the season. In last night’s match alone five Demons found the net to put points on the board, stopping a four-game losing streak for Washington with a 6-0 victory.

Despite dominating ball possession for much of the game, Washington didn’t score until the 35th minute of the first half. The goal finally came from senior Joe Smith, putting in his third goal of the season to gain a 1-0 advantage.

Head coach Steven Caulk explained the play as the key that unlocked the door for the Demons, “Once they scored one, it took them a minute and a half to score another one.” Caulk said, “We had some poor finishes touches for about 35 minutes tonight and then suddenly we found our game again.”

The Demons received goals from Tony Torres, Alex Lopez, Christian Mejia, and Andres Gutierrez in the victory. Washington is 2-0 in non-conference play, outscoring their opponents 8-0 in those contests.

Smith said the victory serves as moral lift for the team, “We needed this win to definitely boost out confidence going into our next game,” Smith said, “We came into the game with our heads a little down but with a good win and some more work I know we can turn things around.”

Washington improves their record to 2-4 and won’t return to action for a week. The Demons’ next game is the final regular season road match for the team, traveling to Keokuk for a Southeast Conference battle with the Chiefs (5-2 overall).
