Planting is nearly done in southeast Iowa. According to this week’s USDA crop progress and condition report, corn planting in this part of the state is 99 percent complete, while 65 percent of this year’s soybeans are planted. Washington County farmer Jim Cuddeback says producers are waiting for things to dry up following recent rainfall so they can finish soybean planting.
He explains current soil moisture is adequate to get this year’s crop started, but rains later in the growing season will be needed if they want to see decent yields.
Cuddeback adds with planting just about finished, he and other producers are preparing to apply post-emergent herbicide to control weeds and side-dress corn with nitrogen to improve yields.
