Two K-9 units are coming to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. The $42,000 project is partially funded by a $21,000 Washington County Riverboat Foundation grant, which was awarded last week. Private donations are also helping fund the program.

Chief Deputy Jared Schneider explained the two German Shepherds will be selected overseas by a trainer and then there will be a five week training program for the dogs and their handlers. Training will be held June 1st through 30th, with graduation on July 1st. The K-9 units will be dual purpose narcotics and patrol detection teams.

Deputy Nolan Burke, who will be one of the handlers, told KCII News that having two teams will benefit the department and community by having faster response times. The other handler will be Deputy Nathan Schmuecker.

Tuesday, the Washington County Board of Supervisors recognized a $250 donation from Ideal Ready Mix.

Sheriff Jerry Dunbar adds since July 1, 2014, $21,337.20 has been raised for the program. He adds this does not include the in-kind donations received including dog food and vet fees. Mid-Prairie School District is making the dog houses.
