Iowans can now enroll in Quitline Iowa’s eight-week tobacco cessation program for free nicotine patches, gum or lozenges for eligible participants. Today is World No Tobacco Day. Director of the Iowa Department of Public Health Division of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control, Jerilyn Oshel, states the estimated annual Iowa health care costs directly associated with tobacco use total $1 billion. She adds tobacco takes the lives of more than 4,400 adults each year in Iowa and globally 6 million people die due to tobacco-related causes each year.

Quitline Iowa partners participants with coaches to help create a quitting plan, establish a quit date, and provide advice during the quitting process. According to Quitline services, it takes an average of three attempts before a smoker successfully quits tobacco.
