Attempting to advance his junior golf season into the middle of the month, Washington alumni Alex Thode saved his best Division II regional performance for the Midwest tournament’s final day. Thode and the Lewis University Flyers ended their run in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Golf tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Cog Hill Dubsdread Golf Course in Lemont, IL.

After shooting an identical three over 75 during the first two days of the regional tournament, Thode shaved two strokes off his final round score to end the tournament seven over 223. He recorded five birdies and six bogeys during Wednesday’s final round, helping the former Demon into a five-way tie for 17th place among the 108 person field. He was the top finisher for the Flyers’ golf team.

On Wednesday’s PM Sports Page, Thode’s high school golf coach Mark Berhow said he is proud of his former player’s recent accomplishments, “When he was a golfer for me, he demonstrated the same high quality and high character that he is in college.” Berhow said, “It is just fantastic to see him taking his golf game to the next level and scoring what I knew he was capable of doing. He put in, and still puts in, a lot of extra practice and effort to get him to this point.”

Berhow added when he talks to his golfers about character, integrity and performance with his team, Thode’s name is consistently brought up. Thode played for Berhow from 2009-2012, helping the Demons earn four straight trips to the state golf tournament.

The Flyers, as a unit, finished in eighth place out of the 20 team field, three shots away from fifth place and a spot in the NCAA Division II National Championship Golf tournament.
