In a battle of top ten teams, the No. 6 ranked Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks (3-0) had their home opener of the season as they take on the No. 10 ranked Mt. Vernon Mustangs (0-3).

As heard on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and on KCIIradio.com, it was a high offensive affair with the Golden Hawks pulling away with the victory 12-8.

After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Hawks caught fire in the second scoring seven runs. The inning was highlighted by senior Taylor Kurtz, who hit a two run homer her second home run of the season. The Mustangs came back with a three run home run at the top of the third to cut the deficit to four. Mid-Prairie scored two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 9-3.

Mt. Vernon added three more runs in the fourth and Mid-Prairie would get one player home to make it 10-6 after four. After no teams scored in the fifth inning, Mid-Prairie junior’s Ali Naylor and Amber Kral each had a home run both over the center field fence to bring the score to 12-6. The Mustangs had one ditch effort scoring two runs in the seventh, but was not enough to come away with the victory.

Kurtz gets the win pitching two innings, and junior Emma Troyer gets the save striking out seven batters.

Mid-Prairie stays unbeaten at 3-0 and heads to Iowa City Regina on Monday in a conference battle against the Regals. Game will take place at 6 p.m. at the Regina softball field.
