The first day of the Iowa Girls and Boys State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines has come to an end..

The WACO Warriors girls’ shuttle hurdle team just missed the the medal cut off in the Class 1A competition, placing ninth with a time of 1:10.73. The squad includes McKenna White, Kasey Sutton, Jennie Greene, and Jalyssa Jepson.

Pekin’s Isaiah Wittrock completed his first state track event, competing in the Class 1A 400 meter dash. His quarter mile run of 52.96 ranks 15th in the state.

Winfield-Mount Union’s Karlie Wade battled in the Class 1A long jump. Wade’s leap of 15 feet 8 inches was the 12th best performance in the meet.

Two KCII area athletes finished outside the top eight in the Class 1A 400 meter dash. Highland’s Kelsey Hora clocked her quarter mile run in 1:02.71, the 12th best finish in the field. Lone Tree’s Paige Doerhmann posted a time of 1:03.35, the 15th best finish in Class 1A.

Two KCII area sprinters have qualified for the finals of the Class 1A 200 meter dash. WACO’s Bryce Achen’s time of 22.69 seconds was the top time in his heat and the fifth best finish in the field. Winfield-Mount Union’s Garrett Baker crossed the finish line in 22.99 seconds, the third fastest time in his heat and the eighth best time in the preliminary round.

Pekin’s boys’ 4×800 meter relay team placed 17th in the Class 1A field, posting a time of 8:37.32. The squad includes Chandler Eckley, Sam Roth, Cole Reighard, and Ryan Millikin.

Pekin’s girls’ 4×800 meter relay team crossed the finish line in 18th place, clocking a time of 10:37.91. The squad includes Sloan Reighard, Shea Dahlstrom, Payton Lock, and Mackenzie Martin.

A pair of KCII area athletes battled in the Class 1A 100 meter dash preliminaries. WACO Bryce Achen completed his sprint in 11.23 seconds, the second best finish in his heat but the finished the overall competition in ninth place. Keota’s Nate Sieren clocked his 100 meter dash in 11.4 seconds, the seventh best performance in his heat and finished 15th overall in the field.

A trio of KCII area athletes finished outside the top eight in the Class 1A long jump competition. Winfield-Mount Union’s Zach Davis posted an 11th place finish at the state meet, jumping 20 feet 0.75 inches. Sigourney’s Avery Moore came in 17th place with a leap of 19 feet 3.5 inches. Iowa Mennonite School’s Drake Brezina finished one spot behind Moore, leaping 19 feet 3.5 inches.

Lone Tree’s Jovonte Squires medals in the long jump competition, finishing in third place with a leap of 21 feet 4.5 inches. Junior Jared Hudson came in 19th place in the long jump, recording a leap of 19 feet even.

Highland’s Jake Yeggy completed his performance in the Class 1A shot put competition. Yeggy’s throw of 45 feet 0.75 inches placed him 22nd in the 24 person field.

Pekin junior Shelbie Williams is the Class 1A champion in the shot put competition, hurling the shot 38 feet 10.25 inches, a full 7.25 inches farther than the rest of the field.

Winfield-Mount Union’s Lou Krieger-Coen finished in the middle of the pack in the Class 1A shot put competition, finishing in 14th place with a recorded throw of 33 feet 6.75 inches.

Iowa Mennonite School’s Riley Schmieder medaled in the Class 1A 3000 meter run, clocking the seventh best time in the meet at 11:18.35.

Five KCII area athletes battled in the Class 1A 3200 meter run. Highland’s Keiffer Sexton posted the best time in the two mile run among the area athletes, finishing in third place with a time of 10:03.63. Joining Sexton on the podium is Winfield-Mount Union’s Gavin Bence, who placed seventh with a time of 10:13.66. Winfield-Mount Union’s Johnathan Quinn finished just outside the top eight, placing ninth with a two mile time of 10:22.13. Highland’s Evan Mahler finished in 16th place with a time of 10:36. Finally, Pekin’s Malcom Myers rounds out the area athletes in the 3200 meter run, finishing in 18th place with a time of 10:39.90.

The Pekin Panthers had two runners score points in the Class 1A 3000 meter dash. Gwynne Wright crossed the finish line in 10:52.20, the second best finish in the field. Classmate Taylor Lock added to the Panther’s point total, earning an eighth place finish with a time of 11:19.1. Pekin earned nine points for the team competition from the 3000 meter run.

Mid-Prairie Levi Duwa competed in the Class 2A shot put competition, hurling the shot 51 feet 8.25 inches. The throw was the 10th farthest among the 24 person field.

Washington’s shuttle hurdle team of Jacob Hennigan, Alex Gonzalez, Caleb Bex, and Gage Redlinger placed fifth in the Class 3A preliminary event, clocking a time of 59.69 seconds. The team has qualified for Saturday’s final race at 11:40 a.m.

Mid-Prairie senior Lexi Duwa has completed the preliminaries of the Class 2A 200 meter dash in 26.75 seconds, the seventh best time in her heat and the 16th best finish overall.

Washington’s Macy Marek has qualified for Saturday’s finals of the Class 3A 100 meter dash. Her time of 12.71 placed her second in her heat and was the third best finish overall. Marek finished the preliminaries of the Class 3A 200 meter dash in 26.20 seconds, the fifth best time in her heat and the 12th best finish overall.

Columbus’s Mauricio Ramierz and Mid-Prairie sophomore Isaiahn Powell both competed in the Class 2A long jump competition. Ramierz placed fifth with a leap of 21 feet 7 inches. Powell performance 20 feet 3.5 inches was the ninth best finish, a half inch short of eighth place.

Ramirez sprints to an 11th place finish in the Class 2A 100 meter dash preliminaries, clocking a time of 11.26 seconds. Ramirez was two-tenths of a second away from qualifying for Saturday’s final race.

Mid-Prairie’s Anna Hostetler competed in the Class 2A 3000 meter run, placing ninth out of the 24 person field with a time of 11:01.74.

Mid-Prairie’s Jared Draper battled in the Class 2A 3200 meter run, finishing in 15th place with a time of 10:09.78.

The Columbus Wildcats girls’ shuttle hurdle relay team crossed the finish line in 22nd place, clocking a time of 1:13.17. The squad includes Laura Minks, Shania Boyd, Monaye Matthews, and Kelsey Pretz.

Events for day two of the Iowa Girls and Boys State Track and Field Meet will be begin at 9 a.m. at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
