Playing against the top golfers in the Southeast Conference, the Washington Demon girls’ golf squad proved to be the best of the bunch. Washington competed Tuesday morning in the Southeast Conference meet at the Lake Cooper Golf Course in Keokuk, and the Demons came away with the league title by shooting a team low 351 strokes.

Three of the six all-conference honorees are from Washington, including freshman Sarah Nacos who earned medalist honors by carding a five over 75 for the tournament. Junior teammate Deanna Peiffer finished the tournament in second place individually, scoring an 85 at the conference meet. Demon senior Sarah Waitie needed extra golf to earn her place among the all-conference crew. Tied at 91 strokes with Mount Pleasant’s Elle Schleisman, Waite edged the Panther junior by two strokes on the first playoff hole for a fifth place overall finish.

The other members of the all-Southeast Conference golf team include: Mount Pleasant junior Haley Booton shooting a 88, Fairfield junior Lindsey Repp carding an 89, and Schleisman with 91.

Washington girls’ golf coach Len Kull said as the day went along he saw his team’s lead increase, “From what I was seeing, we just gradually lengthened the lead throughout the entire day.” Kull said, ” I thought we showed a lot of composure and resolve. They just had their teeth clinched and they were just not to be denied today.”

Mount Pleasant came in a distant second in the team competition 18 strokes behind the Demons, recording 369 strokes for the tournament. Fairifeld came in third with 410, and Keokuk rounded out the conference with 551 strokes.

The Demon girls’ golf team has one final tune up before next week’s regional tournament on Friday. Washington is set to compete in a triangular against the Williamsburg Raiders and the Mount Pleasant Panthers with tee time set for 4 p.m. Friday at the Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club.
