Competing against the best athletes from the Southeast Conference, the Washington Demon boys’ and girls’ track teams earned a handful of top honors. The two squads battled competitors from Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk and Mount Pleasant Thursday night at Fort Madison High School for conference bragging rights.

The Washington boys’ track team gained two all-conference honors, one individual and one relay team. Senior Tommy Peterson is your 2015 All-Conference performer in the shot put competition after recording a throw of 51 feet, 9.5 inches. It is the eleventh time this season Peterson has topped his field of competition in the event, and has earned all-conference honors for a second straight season.

The boys’ rounded out their all-conference honorees with their 4×100 meter relay team which finished with a top time of 45.5 seconds. The relay team included Jacob Hennigan, Kyle Schindler, Ethan Hansen and Gage Redlinger. Washington finished the team competition with 60 points in third place.

The Demon girls’ track team earned all-conference honors in five events, three individual and two relay teams. Demon sprinter Macy Marek had another strong showing, taking all-conference honors in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Marek clocked her 100 meter dash in 12.56 seconds, and her 200 meter dash in 26.75 seconds. Junior Morgan Kimball bested the field in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.93. Both Marek and Kimball earned all-conference honors for a second straight season.

The crew of Marek, Kimball, Makenzi Marek, and Amber Salow brought home the team’s final all-conference award, topping the 800 sprint medley in 2:12.74. Washington placed second in the team competition with 88 points.

This marks the final tune up before next Thursday’s district meet, which will decide who advances to the state track meet in Des Moines. Both the boys’ and girls’ track teams are slated to run in the 3A District 6 meet Thursday, hosted by the Mount Pleasant Panthers. First events begin at 4 p.m. at the Maple Leaf Athletic Complex.
