“Better Boy,” “Big Beef,” “Jet Star,” and “Supersweet 100” are a few of the recommended tomato varieties for home gardens in Iowa. Horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach state tomato plants perform best in fertile, well-drained soils, where they have at least six hours of direct sun daily.

Also, rotate where tomatoes are planted in the garden each year, or plant in four to five-gallon containers. June 20th, approximately, is the last practical date for planting tomatoes.
