The collection of talent the Winfield-Mount Union boys’ track team is sending to this year’s Iowa Girls and Boys High School Track and Field Meet is wide ranging. Seven Wolves will compete in five events at this week’s track meet including, the 200 meter dash, the 4×200 meter relay, the 1600 meter run, the 3200 meter run, and the long jump.

Junior Garrett Baker and sophomore Gavin Bence will represent Winfield-Mount Union in two events. Baker is the featured athlete for the Wolves in the 200 meter dash and running the third leg of the 4×200 meter relay. Baker’s 200 meter run of 23.17 seconds was the second best time in the Class 1A District 10 meet in Wayland last Thursday, but qualified him for the state meet as the eighth best time in the state. The crew of junior Kyler Smith senior Levi Giese, Baker, and senior Keaton Pallister clocked the district’s second best time of 1:33.58 in the 4×200 relay, making the state cut off as the eighth best time in Class 1A.

Bence is the showcase athlete for the Wolves in the distance events, qualifying for the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs. His one mile district run of 4:45.58 was the second best in the Wayland district, but ranks as the 11th best time in the state. Bence clocked the best two-mile time in Class 1A last week, winning the District 10 meet with a time of 10:05.19. His teammate, junior Johnathan Quinn, joins Bence in the 3200 meter race. Quinn clocked the two mile in 10:21.94, the fifth best time in District 10. He was able to qualify as one of the top 12 fastest times not to win the district meet. The top six finishers from District 10’s 3200 meter run qualified for the state meet, each qualifying in the top half of the field.

Finally, junior Zach Davis represents the Wolves in the state’s long jump competition. Davis’s season best leap of 20 feet 2 inches was the second best jump in the district, but qualified for the Iowa’s top meet as the 12th best performance in the field.

The first events for the W-MU boys’ track team will be Thursday at 2 p.m. when Davis competes in the long jump.
