There is still time to find a gift for dads ahead of tomorrow’s Father’s Day events. Sarah Sadrakula, director of Main Street Washington, encourages you to shop local for gifts, as doing so supports locally owned and operated businesses who also support the greater community.

Father’s Day became an official holiday in 1972 with a proclamation by then president Richard Nixon.

Also, the Department of Public Safety’s Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, or GTSB, reminds Iowans to travel safely this weekend. A trend has emerged with Father’s Day being the highest single day fatality holiday in Iowa. Over the past 10 years, 42 traffic fatalities have happened in Iowa on Father’s Day. The GTSB reminds you to buckle up, obey the speed limits, watch for pedestrians and motorcycles, don’t drink and drive, and avoid distracted driving.
