The early season slide continued for the Washington Demon softball team (1-5 overall; 0-4 Southeast) on Thursday night. The Demons welcomed the No. 15 Fairfield Trojans (6-0 overall) to Washington’s Softball Complex for a pair of Southeast Conference clashes. Fairifield left Washington with a couple of victories, 9-2 in game one and 5-3 in game two.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Trojans took control of game in the top of the third. The Trojans plated two runners in each of the next three innings, and had three runners score in the top of the sixth for a 9-0 lead. Washington responded in the bottom of the sixth with two runs scored by freshman Kayla Andrew and Brooke Stout, but wouldn’t be enough in a 9-2 setback.

Fairfield jumped out to an early lead in game two off of a two run home run by Sarah Trent in the first inning for a 2-0 advantage. Washington responded with a run in the bottom of the inning as senior Kolbi Breard hit an RBI single to score sophomore Jessie Buchholz, cutting the deficit to one. Fairfield extended the lead with single runs in the third, fourth and sixth inning to push their lead to 5-1. Washington strung together a two out rally in the sixth, as freshman Morgan Brinning and Breard both scored a run in the bottom of the innings. The teams played a scoreless seventh inning, for a 5-3 final score.

The losses drop Washington’s overall record to 1-5. The Demons are back in action on Monday evening, traveling to Keokuk for a pair of Southeast Conference games against the Chiefs (5-1 overall).
