The home portion of the schedule hasn’t been kind early to the Washington Demon softball team (1-3 overall; 0-2 Southeast).
Washington opened the home slate last Friday against the Class 2A No. 2 Highland Huskies, falling 10-0 in five innings of play. The Demons returns to Washington’s Softball Complex tonight, hosting the Class 4A No. 15 Fairfield Trojans (4-0 overall; 2-0 Southeast) in a league doubleheader.
Washington finds themselves in an early season offensive slump. The Demons have scored three runs in their last three games, after Washington scored 15 runs in their season opening win against Columbus last Wednesday. Senior Kolbi Breard is posting a team best .455 average through four games, while freshman Morgan Brinning leads the Demons in total hits with six. Three of the Demons’ four pitching starts have come from junior Mackenzie Knutson. She has pitched 16 innings this season, allowing 17 runs on 20 hits while striking out eight batters and walking eight others.
Fairfield is unblemished in early season play, sweeping the Sigourney Savages in a pair of non conference games 13-4 and 13-3. Senior Mackenzie McClure leads the Trojans with 10 runs batted in through four games, while junior Kelsey Roberts has reached base on 11 of her 15 at bats this season, 10 on base hits. Sophomore Haley Beard and junior Alli Deao have combined to give up two earned runs this season, striking out a combine 18 batters.
First pitch of today’s Southeast Conference softball doubleheader is set for 5:30 p.m. at Washington’s Softball Complex.
