Two Southeast Conference rivals will collide in Washington this evening. The Demon baseball and softball teams welcome the Mount Pleasant Panthers to Washington High School for a pair of league showdowns.

The Demon softball team (1-11 overall; 0-6 Southeast) returns to the diamond after a pair of hard fought losses to the No. 2 Oskaloosa Indians Tuesday evening, 7-5 and 5-2. Washington held a three-run lead in game one before allowing a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh, including a walk off two-run home run for a 7-5 setback. Junior Mackenzie Knutson put her mark on the game both at the plate and in the field. She went two for three at the plate, collecting a triple and scoring two runs. Knutson also threw her fourth complete game of the season, allowing seven runs on eight hits, walking four and striking out three batters in the setback. The losses extend the Demon losing streak to 11 games over the last two weeks.

Mount Pleasant enters tonight’s game with a 9-6 overall record. Sophomores Sarah Moffett and Bailey Johnson have recorded two homeruns and drove in 14 runs a piece to lead the Panther offense. Senior Shelby Alexander leads the conference with 33 innings pitched so far this season, posting a 2.12 ERA with a strikeout to walk ratio of 5:1 (20 K; 4 BB).

First pitch of the varisty softball doubleheader is set for 5:30 p.m. at Washington’s Softball Complex.

The Demon baseball team finds themselves amidst a three game losing streak, including a 13-1 setback in four innings Tuesday evening to the No. 2 Pella Little Dutch (10-0). Nine of the 13 runs allowed by the Demons were unearned, including seven in the first inning. Washington capitalized on a lead off double by Bryce Craff in the bottom of the first, bringing him home on a Ryan Loy single for the lone run of the game. Washington, who outscored opponents 36-4 during a three game losing streak last week, has been outscored 21-8 during their three-game skid.

Mount Pleasant’s baseball team (4-7 overall) has been struggling this season, winning four of their first 11 games.
