Investigators are trying to determine what led Fairfield police officers to fire their weapons early Tuesday morning. According to the Fairfield Police Department, officers attempted to stop a vehicle near the intersection of 12th Street and Jefferson Avenue at approximately 1 a.m.

The vehicle eluded law enforcement until it was eventually stopped south of Birmingham in Van Buren County, over 10 miles away. Before the driver was taken into custody, officers with the police department discharged their weapons. No one was injured.

The incident remains under investigation. At this time, the names of the officers and suspect are not being released.

The police department has received assistance from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Reserves, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office and Reserves, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Jefferson County Attorney’s Office and the Van Buren County Attorney’s Office.
