The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into an incident where members of the Fairfield Police Department discharged their weapons. At 1 a.m. Tuesday, Officer Kathy Blumhagen attempted to stop a vehicle that failed to yield for an emergency vehicle, leading to a high speed chase that ended south of Birmingham in Van Buren County. The vehicle driven by 19-year-old Dakota Ray Murray of Keosaqua spun out on Kings Trail. After Blumhagen and Sergeant David Wall exited their vehicles to attempt to take the occupants into custody, the vehicle drove in a reckless manner toward them. Shots were then fired by officers at the vehicle, and the driver was taken into custody without further incident. No one was injured.

In addition to multiple traffic offenses, Murray is charged in Jefferson County with felony eluding law enforcement. Per the department’s policy, the officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. That part of the investigation is being handled by the Iowa DCI, whose report will be compiled once all interviews are completed, physical evidence is analyzed and audio and video tapes are reviewed.

No further information will be released until the investigations conducted by the DCI and police department are completed.
