An investigation into a shooting involving Louisa County Sheriff’s deputies continues. According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, 55-year-old Richard Spurling of Muscatine led the deputies on a pursuit on Stewart Road after an attempted traffic stop at around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies approached the vehicle after it stopped on Fruitland Road near the intersection with Crimson Road. Spurling then began driving towards one of the deputies. This led one sheriff’s deputy to discharge his firearm, striking the driver once in the upper torso. Spurling was transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. His charges include operating while intoxicated, eluding, driving while revoked and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The names of the deputies are being withheld until they can be interviewed. The investigation being conducted by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is ongoing.
