Irises in Full Bloom

White, yellow, and purple are just a few of the colors of bearded irises in full bloom in the area. Horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recently shared some tips for growing the flowers. As soon as bearded irises are finished blooming, spent flowers should be removed to prevent seed pod formation. The flower stalk should be cut at its base when all the flowers have faded.

Also, dead foliage should be removed each year in late fall or early spring.

Bearded irises should be divided every three to five years to avoid overcrowding. Dividing should be done in July or August, for directions click here.
