The connection between freshman Sarah Nacos, junior Deanna Peiffer, and senior Sarah Waitie goes beyond being teammates on Washington’s State Championship golf team. The Demon trio played a pivotal role in Washington’s road to the Class 4A state championship.

The postseason bond between the three began forming during the Southeast Conference tournament at the Lake Cooper Golf Course in Keokuk on May 12 . Nacos (1st), Peiffer (2nd), and Waite (5th) placed among the top six golfers in the individual competition, earning them first team all-conference honors. Washington won the conference title by 18 strokes over the Mount Pleasant Panthers.

The competitive relationship between the three grew during the Class 4A Regional Tournament at the St. Andrew’s Golf Course in Cedar Rapids. Washington won the regional event by 56 strokes in large part due to Nacos, Peiffer, and Waite finishing in first, second, and third place respectively in the individual competition.

The Demon triad completed their season Tuesday by medaling in the Class 4A state golf tournament by finishing in the top 10 in the individual competition. Nacos was the top individual performer, Peiffer placed eight, and Waite capped off her career with a ninth place finish. All three made the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Associations All-State Team. Nacos and Peiffer made the first team squad, while Waite earned second team honors.

Three has been a lucky number in other ways for the Demons. This year’s state title is the third overall in program history and Waite finished her high school career as a three time medalist at the state tournament.
