Voters in the Washington Community School District have two weeks left to vote in a special election. A vote is being held to determine if community members want to approve $2.3 million in general obligation bonds or not. The project would add six preschool classrooms to Stewart Elementary and includes the demolition of the Stewart West building as well as the construction of a pick up and drop off zone.

At the recent school board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Mike Joregensen explained the project cost does not include the construction of the child care center. Construction on the two projects would be done simultaneously, but the expenses for the child care center have been gifted by the Women of Washington Iowa Endowment.

People can vote now in person at the Washington County Auditor’s Office, or on June 30th from noon to 8 p.m. in Washington and Brighton.
