Washington County will be getting a new piece of equipment to better shape and stabilize roads. Washington County Engineer Jacob Thorius explained at Tuesday’s Washington County Board of Supervisors meeting that he is looking at getting an Asphalt Zipper or Road Hog, which he described as a large rear-tine garden tiller used to reshape and compact the road, as stabilizing agents can be added for a more uniform mix throughout. Thorius explained the equipment will cost around $150,000 and will not have an impact on his department’s budget.

Supervisor Abe Miller was hesitant and recommended renting the equipment before purchase. One other county in Iowa, Franklin County, has a similar piece of equipment. Thorius added he observed such equipment in action and to rent can cost approximately $26,000 per month, which can be complicated by weather.

Thorius explained having this will improve gravel roads and result in less maintenance work needed.
