Early possession of first place in the Southeast Conference standings is on the line tonight at Dick Sojka Memorial Field in Washington. The Washington Demon baseball team (3-2 overall; 2-0 overall) welcomes the Fairfield Trojans (2-3 overall; 0-0 Southeast) to town for a pair of league contests.

The Demon have won their previous three games by a combined margin of 30 runs, including sweeping the Fort Madison Bloodhounds, 10-3 and 15-0, in five innings on Monday. Senior Blake Weidman leads the Southeast Conference with eight runs batted in, and his four doubles are tied with Austin Almon of Keokuk for the league lead. The Demons are tops in the league with 43 runs scored so far this season, 18 more than the rest of the conference.

Tonight marks the opening of the Southeast Conference season for Fairfield. After scoring a combined five runs in three losses last week, the Trojans’ bats came alive Saturday in a 13-5 victory over the Davis County Mustangs in Bloomfield. Junior Alex Crile’s 14 at bats are the most on the squad, and his five hits are tied with senior Narendra Martin for the team lead. Crile also leads the Trojans with six runners batted in.

The Demons and Trojans have both beaten the Central Lee Hawks on the diamond this season, Washington winning 9-1 at home last Friday while Fairfield defeated the Hawks 10-8 in Donnellson on Tuesday.

Fairfield swept the series against Washington last summer, winning all four meetings by a combined margin of 33-23.
