Facing an undefeated ranked opponent, the Washington Demon softball team (1-11 overall; 0-6 Southeast) entered the bottom of the seventh Tuesday evening on the verge of their first win in nearly two weeks. As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, the Demons traveled to Oskalossa for a pair of non-conference clashes against the Indians (13-0 overall). In the first game of the evening, Washington surrendered five runs in the final inning off two home run hits as the Indians dropped the Demons 7-5.

It was the best offensive output the Demons have strung together since their 15-3 opening season victory against Columbus, collecting five runs on eight hits. Washington scored two runs in the third, two more in the fifth and tacked on an additional run in the seventh for a 5-2 advantage heading into the final Indian offensive frame.

Oskaloosa made the most of their final at bat, sending six batters to the plate with five reaching base. The Indians tied the game at five on a three-run home run to left center field by junior Kylee Silliman. After a fly out by sophomore Alexis Westercamp gave the Demons the first out of the inning, Washington walked the ensuing batter and senior Peyton Zickefoose ended the game by sending a walk off two-run home run over the left field fence to end the game 7-5.

Freshman Morgan Brinning went three for three at the plate in game one, reaching base on a trio of singles and scoring a run. Junior Mackenzie Knutson went two for three offensively, scoring two runs and recording one of two triples for Washington. Knutson also went the distance on the mound, allowing seven runs on eight hits, walking four and striking out three batters in the setback.

Washington fell in game two of the doubleheader, 5-2. Washington freshman Brooke Stout recorded her first double of the season, and the Demons received singles from Megan Mitchell, Brinning, and Anna Wheeler in the defeat.

The Demon softball team returns to the Washington Softball Complex on Thursday evening, hosting the Mount Pleasant Panthers (9-6 overall; 2-2 Southeast).
