Rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast for the area this weekend. Larry Smith, Washington and Keokuk counties emergency management coordinator, wants area residents to be prepared for severe weather this summer. Smith explains the difference between a storm watch and a storm warning depends on the severity of the weather. A watch is when a storm is likely to become strong, while a warning states a strong storm is in the area and citizens need to take precautions to remain safe.

He recommends people have emergency kits with food and water in their safe places, whether it be a basement or interior room. The kits should include enough food and water for each person and pet for up to 72 hours, as well as batteries, a weather radio and any medications needed. Listen to KCII for weather updates.
